My polar alignment fight that ate up a whole night

I was trying to image the Andromeda Galaxy from my backyard last weekend and thought my polar alignment was close enough. Spent three hours taking 5-minute subs only to find every single one had star trails. The whole process of redoing the alignment, checking the mount, and tweaking the guide scope took me until 3 AM. I finally got it sorted, but I lost my whole imaging window. Has anyone else had a simple alignment mistake ruin a planned session like that?

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt (and the sleep deprivation). It's crazy how a tiny error at the start can snowball into a lost night. I've learned to double-check alignment with a quick drift test before committing to long subs.

That drift test idea from @oliver_stone15 is a solid move... honestly, a quick polar alignment check before starting saves more time than it costs. It's the best way to avoid that sinking feeling hours later.

Yeah that sinking feeling is the worst. @oliver_stone15 is right, a quick check first is way better than finding out at 3 AM. Been there too, it's brutal.
