Rant: Drove 90 minutes to a dark sky spot in Cherry Springs and the moon ruined everything
Went out to Cherry Springs State Park last Saturday hoping to finally get a clean shot of the Milky Way. I checked the calendar, checked the weather, but completely spaced on the moon phase, and a nearly full moon washed out the whole sky until 11pm. Stood there in 40 degree weather watching other people pack up while I waited for it to finally dip below the tree line. Does anyone actually use a moon phase app you trust, or do you just memorize the cycle?
Cherry Springs is like a 4 hour drive for me so honestly I'd just check the moon calendar before leaving the house. A quick google search takes 10 seconds and saves you the whole trip. A bright moon at a dark sky park is kinda just bad planning, not really a tragedy.
