The 2004 forum post that told me to stop shooting the moon
Back on the old Cloudy Nights board, some guy named AstroBob said my stacked moon shots were pointless and to aim for deep sky instead. I ignored him for 6 months, wasted a ton of hours on crater closeups. Finally tried a 2 minute exposure of Orion and it worked. Has anyone else had advice they hated that was actually spot on?

Did you keep any of those crater shots or did they get deleted out of shame? I still have a hard drive full of blurry Moon pictures from my own stubborn phase, and honestly, they look like someone took a photo of a ping pong ball through a dirty window. My version of AstroBob told me to stop chasing planets and learn to polar align, and I fought it for a whole year before I finally gave in. That one evening of guided nebulae made me feel like I'd been wasting my time on purpose, which I kinda was. Now I tell every newbie the same boring advice, and they ignore me just like I ignored Bob.
