Old lady next door gave me a key to her house last week
I've lived in my house in East Atlanta for about 7 years now. My neighbor Margaret is 84 and lives alone. She came over last Tuesday and handed me a spare key. Said she fell in her kitchen two months ago and couldn't reach her phone for 3 hours. She told me she trusts me more than her own son in California. I put it on my key ring but it feels weird having it. Like I'm responsible for her safety now. Has anyone else had a neighbor do this and how do you handle it?

My uncle had this exact same situation with a guy named Bob who lived three doors down. Bob gave him a key and a list of phone numbers for his kids. One time my uncle went over to check on him and Bob had somehow gotten his leg stuck between the toilet and the wall. No idea how that happened. After they got him out Bob just said "happens more than you'd think" and offered my uncle a beer. That key thing is weird at first but after a while it just becomes part of your day. You'll probably end up knowing more about Margarets tea schedule than you ever wanted to.

Man I feel you on this one. When my grandma's neighbor gave her a key it was the same thing, just that weird weight of knowing someone is counting on you like that. You gotta give Margaret credit for being smart enough to trust you instead of leaving herself stranded again though. Honestly just check on her every few days if you can, even just a quick text or wave from the driveway. If she gave you that key it means she already knows you're good people so don't overthink it too hard. You're basically her backup plan and that's not a bad thing to be.
