Thought I was saving money running the sprinklers at 6am, then my neighbor showed me his water bill
For three summers I ran my sprinklers at 6 in the morning because I thought watering early meant less evaporation, but my neighbor Bill pulled out his July bill at a cookout and it was $40 less than mine on the same size lawn. Turns out the county's new tier rates punish that early window, and running at 4am before the peak cycle kicks in cut my bill by almost a third. Is it worth paying for a smart controller, or are you all just out there with a hose timer and a flashlight like me?

Watched my dad do the exact same thing for years, except his trick was running the sprinklers right when the evening news came on so he could "keep an eye on them" from the couch. One July the water cops rolled up on him and he talked his way out of a ticket by offering the guy a lemonade. He never did figure out the tier rates though, he just kept blaming my mom for taking long showers. That flashlight and hose timer setup sounds about right for how most of us end up doing this stuff anyway.
