TIL that viral CDC mask study got shared 500,000 times but used a sample size of 34 people

I was scrolling through Facebook and saw that article about masks not working with the big CDC logo on it, turns out it was from a preliminary study out of some lab in Florida that only tested 34 volunteers over 2 days. My sister shared it in our family group chat and when I looked up the actual CDC page, they never even published that data as official guidance. The whole thing was just cherry picked numbers from a small trial that got blown up by a blogger with no medical background. How do we get people to check the source before hitting share?

Appreciation post: my grandpa's old hand plane vs. the new electric one I bought

I finally got around to restoring his Stanley No. 4 from the 1950s after fighting with a $60 electric planer on a birch shelf last weekend. The old one took me a few hours to set up right but it left a finish so smooth I didn't even need sandpaper. Has anyone else found that old tools just work better once you put the time into them?

That oak removal where everything went sideways

Honestly, I still think about that job in Austin about 6 years ago. I was taking down a big old live oak that had some rot near the base, and I figured it would be a standard rigging job. But I got too casual with my rope placement and didn't notice a cracked limb up high. When I made the cut, that limb came crashing down and snagged my climbing line, jerking me sideways hard. I ended up dangling there for a minute with bark dust in my eyes, feeling pretty stupid. My ground guy had to toss me a second line so I could cut myself free and re-rig everything from scratch. Has anyone else had a moment where you just had to stop and re-evaluate your whole plan mid-climb?

Vent: Why does every 2012 Ford Focus have that same electrical gremlin?

I spent three days chasing a no-crank condition on a 2012 Focus last week. Tested the starter, battery, and alternator all fine. Finally found the issue in the body control module ground under the glove box. What should have been a 90 minute job took me 15 hours total. Has anyone else found a quicker way to diagnose that specific ground failure?

Appreciation post: That time a gate hinge bolt sheared off at the worst moment

I was putting up a cedar fence in North Haven last Thursday, about 60 feet of board-on-board for a new homeowner. Everything was going smooth until I tested the double gate swing and pop - the bottom hinge bolt just snapped clean. I stood there cussing for a solid minute cause I had no spare 3/8 carriage bolts in the truck. Ended up having to drive 20 miles to the nearest hardware store, cost me an hour of daylight. But here's the thing - that old dude at the counter told me to grab stainless steel bolts next time instead of the zinc-coated ones I always used. Said the zinc ones get brittle after a few seasons of freeze-thaw cycles. Stuck a pair of stainless ones in and they threaded in like butter. Anyone else had zinc hardware give out on them after a few years?

Saw the original Sailor Moon cels at a convention in Portland last month

I was at the Sakura-Con in Portland (well, it was a smaller offshoot) and they had a booth with actual hand-painted animation cels from the 90s Sailor Moon series. The detail on them is crazy different from what you see on screen, like the shading on Usagi's hair has like 4 distinct layers of color. I spent a good 15 minutes just staring at one of Sailor Jupiter in her transformation pose, you can even see the tiny brush strokes on the sparkle effects. It made me realize how much work went into each frame before everything went digital. The seller told me some of these cels were used for the actual broadcast and others were backups, priced anywhere from $80 to $400 depending on the character. Has anyone else come across original cels at a con and bought one?

Grocery store self-checkout got me thinking about something

Three years ago I walked into the Piggly Wiggly on Elm Street and there was just one self-checkout lane with a sign that said staffed only. Last month I counted ten machines at the same store and nobody even asked if I needed help bagging. Is it just me or did we kind of speed through this whole transition without talking about what we lost?

My old garage floor was a total mess for years until I tried that epoxy kit

I put up with that stained, cracked concrete for like 8 years, always thinking a proper floor was a pro-only job. Then last spring I saw a friend's garage after he used a two-part epoxy kit from the hardware store, and it looked brand new. I spent a weekend cleaning, etching, and rolling the stuff on, and the difference is crazy. It went from a dingy gray with oil spots to this smooth, shiny surface that wipes clean in seconds. The best part was the cost, the whole project was under $300 for my two-car space. It's held up perfectly through a Chicago winter of salt and wet boots. Has anyone else done this and found a trick for getting the flakes to spread evenly? Mine ended up a little clumpy in one corner.

Serious question, I saw my local park go from a trash pit to a clean space in about 3 months.

One side says it's the new volunteer group, the other says it's the city finally putting in more bins. What do you think made the real difference?

Update: I thought those $25 scalp scrubbers were just a gimmick for clients

A regular with chronic buildup asked me to try one during her wash, and I saw a visible difference in her scalp clarity after just two minutes. My manager in Charlotte said they've been quietly recommending them for oily scalps for months. Has anyone else started adding a quick scrub step to their basic wash services?
