Bought a $140 laser level that couldn't handle shop dust, back to string lines

I figured a fancy laser would speed up my panel alignment work, but after about 3 weeks in my shop the dust just killed the sensor. The thing started throwing lines off by a quarter inch and I didn't trust it anymore. Took it apart, cleaned the lens twice, still acted up. Has anyone else had laser tools crap out on them in a dusty environment, or did I just get a bad unit?

So you blew it out with a compressor and it actually fixed the sensor for good? That feels like it would just push the dust deeper into the housing.

Used to have the same problem with mine. What finally worked was getting a compressor and blowing it out every couple days before it got bad. Also started keeping it in a ziplock bag when not in use, even during the day on lunch break. Bit of a hassle but the thing lasted another year after that. Probably should just get a cheaper backup to rotate if your shop is that dusty.
