I keep seeing guys skip the primer step on plastic bumper repairs

I mean, I get it saves time upfront but the paint always peels after 6 months in the sun. Anyone else run into this or am I just being too picky?

My buddy Jake spent 3 hours sanding and filling a chunk out of his 2010 Civic bumper and just spray painted over bare plastic. Looked great for about 4 months until a hot July day turned it into a peeling mess that looked like a sunburnt lizard. Primer is like 8 bucks a can and takes 10 minutes to dry, skipping it is basically throwing your whole afternoon in the trash. I swear half the "my paint job failed" posts on here are just people who thought primer was optional.

I mean, idk, maybe it's just me but I've sprayed directly onto bare metal on an old truck bumper and it held up fine for a couple years with no primer, so it really depends on the plastic and the prep work. "Sunburnt lizard" sounds dramatic, your buddy probably just rushed the sanding or used the wrong paint.

Ngl my buddy did the same thing on a fender and it looked awful after one summer.
