Spent 3 hours chasing a rattle that was just a loose bolt in a door panel

Customer said it was coming from the dash, but it was a 10mm that fell behind the speaker. What's the most misleading noise diagnosis you've gotten from a client?

Honestly though, sometimes the customer is the best tool you have. They live with the car every day and hear things we might miss in a quick test drive. That "dash rattle" could easily be a vibration that travels, making it super hard to pinpoint without their input. I've had folks be spot on about weird noises I would have written off.

My favorite is when they bring in a recording on their phone. It's always just thirty seconds of road noise and them yelling "hear that?" over the blinker.

Yeah, it's like that with anything that gets used regularly. My landlord will walk through my apartment and miss the cabinet door that won't stay shut, but I deal with it three times a day. Or a teacher might not catch the specific way a textbook explanation confuses people, but the whole class knows which page makes no sense. The person in the trenches always has the real data.

But sometimes the person in the trenches is just hearing things.
