TIL that blending clear coat over a blend panel instead of the whole panel saves material but bites you in 6 months
I have been doing this about 14 years now and up until maybe two years ago I was a big fan of just clearing the blend area on a spot repair. Saves clear, saves time, looks great when it rolls out of the booth. Then a guy brought back his Tacoma 8 months after I fixed a door dent on the passenger side, and the sun had cooked that blend line until you could see it from ten feet away. Not a burn, not peeling, just a dull stripe where the old clear and my clear met. I called my buddy who has been spraying at a dealer in Mesa for 20 years and he said yeah, that is why he always carries clear across the whole panel, even on a small repair. Two doors since then I did the full panel, and no comebacks. The material cost is maybe 30 bucks more per job. Cheaper than eating a re-spray on my own dime. Has anyone found a clear that actually holds up on a blend, or is full panel just the rule now?

Man, this hits home. I read a tech article a while back that said UV rays break down the clear at the blend edge way faster than the rest, since you have two different layers curing at different rates. That dull stripe is the old clear and new clear not aging the same, so full panel really is the only safe way to go.
