Unpopular opinion: the 20% parts markup myth needs to die
I was digging through some old shop paperwork from a place I worked at in Fort Worth back in 2019 and noticed our parts markup averaged 42% on aftermarket panels, not the 20% everyone keeps talking about online. That surprised me because I always figured we were running thin on parts to stay competitive with the two dealers down the road. Turns out the real margin was hiding in the small stuff, clips, brackets, seam sealer, all that junk nobody itemizes on the estimate. I called a buddy who runs a shop in Garland and he pulled his numbers and got 38%, so it was not just us. Anyone else tracking their actual parts margin per job, or do most of you just eyeball it?
