Just realized my shortcut on the Eagle Rock loop near Sedona was the dumbest call I've made on a trail
Last Saturday I decided to skip the marked switchbacks on the Wilson Mountain route and cut straight up a scree chute to save maybe 20 minutes. About halfway up, a loose rock the size of a dinner plate rolled under my foot and I slid 15 feet, catching myself on a juniper branch that scraped up my whole forearm. I sat there for a minute, drank some water, and then did the slow, humbling thing of down-climbing to the real trail and following it like everyone else. Has anyone else had a shortcut bite them and change how they pick routes now?
Wait, a rock the size of a dinner plate rolled under your foot and you only slid 15 feet? How did that juniper branch not snap right off when you grabbed it?
