Map says 11 miles, my legs say 17, why do trail apps lowball the ridge section on the Georgia stretch
Hiked the Duncan Ridge loop near Blairsville with three friends, and every one of us had a different mileage total because the apps all use straight-line guesses over those switchbacks and gap climbs. My buddy's watch read 17.2 when the map promised 11, and we blew our water plan because of it. How do you all get real numbers before a trip, do you just double whatever the app tells you?
Ran into this exact thing on the Duncan Ridge loop last spring. My phone said 11.3 and my buddy's watch died at 14 something, then he charged it that night and it showed 16.8 total. That is a 5 mile gap, which is nuts when you are rationing water. Now I just pull the gpx from someone who posted a real track and add 20 percent for the climb days.
