PSA: I took the shortcut bypass on the Pemi Loop last Saturday and ended up bushwhacking for 4 hours
Thought I'd save time skipping the Osseo Trail switchbacks on a rainy Saturday, but the "shortcut" I found dropped me into a drainage full of blowdowns and thick spruce with no visible trail. I burned 4 hours covering maybe a mile, popped out way south of where I planned, and had to night hike back to Lincoln Woods with a dying headlamp. Has anyone else gotten suckered by a faint herd path that looked legit for the first 100 feet?
That faint herd path thing has burned so many people up there. It looks great for the first hundred feet then just fades into spruce and you're standing there wondering where it went. The Osseo switchbacks are boring but they exist for a reason, and every "shortcut" in the Pemi seems to funnel you into one of those drainages where the blowdowns are stacked like pickup sticks. I've started marking a waypoint at the moment a path stops looking worn because that's usually the real turn around point.
