Took the 'shortcut' on the Timberline Trail and ended up fording a river at midnight
The map said the alternate route near Cloud Cap saved 2 miles, but it completely bypassed the seasonal bridge. I learned to always check the Forest Service site for current conditions, not just the trail guide. Anyone have a good resource for real-time river crossings in the Cascades?

What river level was it when you crossed?

Totally get why you're asking. I crossed last week and it was already up to my knees on the horse. Felt way higher and faster than the usual spot, you know? Made me wonder if they even checked the gauge before heading out. Water was moving so quick it was pushing against the saddle.

Check the USGS gauge at the old bridge before you even load the horse.
