Tried the Foothills Trail in South Carolina with a 22 pound pack and my knees gave out at mile 9
I always heard lighter is better so I cut my base weight down and felt great on flat ground near the trailhead. By mile 9 on the climb up Sassafras my knees were screaming and I had to camp early while two guys with heavier packs passed me easy. So is it really about pack weight or do I need to train my legs on downhill stuff before I blame the gear?
Sassafras at mile 9 with a fresh cut base weight is just your legs not being ready yet, not the pack. Two guys passing you on a climb probably just hike more than you do.
