Update: My old external frame pack finally gave out on the John Muir Trail last week
The main strap ripped clean off near Guitar Lake, so I had to rig it with some paracord for the last 15 miles. Anyone have a good fix for that, or is it finally time to retire this thing?

Honestly, that pack has earned its retirement. A major strap failure on trail is a pretty clear sign it's done. Trying to fix it now is just asking for more trouble later.

Bettyh35 is right about major strap failure being a sign. It reminds me of my buddy's tent pole snapping at Tree Line. He spent the whole night holding the roof up with a trekking pole, swearing he'd buy a new one. He still uses that tent, but now he carries a whole repair sleeve and extra cord, just in case. Some gear you just can't let go of, even when it starts falling apart on you.
