I thought plastic bins were fine for my shed, then the mold proved me wrong after 5 days
I kept all my camping gear in those cheap clear plastic bins for 2 years in my shed in Portland. Last month I opened one up after a rainy stretch and my sleeping bag had black spots all over it. I tried scrubbing it with vinegar and baking soda, that took 3 hours and it still smelled musty. I finally switched to a metal cabinet with a small vent and some silica packs, and the difference showed up in like a week. Cost me about $90 at the hardware store but way less than replacing a $200 bag. Has anyone else had mold sneak up in plastic bins even when you thought the lid was sealed tight?
Did you do the thing where you swear the lid is tight but somehow moisture still gets in there? I did that with my own bins for two winters and felt like a genius until I pulled out a moldy tent. Turns out those cheap lids warp and let in damp air, so every temp change basically turns the bin into a tiny rain forest. My fix was way less smart than your metal cabinet, I just drilled a few holes in the sides and tossed in the packs, which worked but looks like a raccoon chewed through it.
