My uncle swore the 'speed up your PC' trick from 2009 still works, so I tried it on my mom's old laptop
My uncle sent me a chain email style tip about deleting temp files to make any computer fast, claiming it worked on his office PC back in 2009. I tried it on my mom's 2011 laptop that takes 6 minutes just to reach the desktop, and it freed up maybe 200MB. The real issue was a failing hard drive making clicking sounds and 2GB of RAM running Windows 10. The take sounds smart because it is old advice that used to matter, back when drives were tiny and full of junk. Clearing temp files is fine but it does nothing when the hardware is dying. Has anyone else had a relative hand them a 'fix' from a decade ago that misses the actual problem?
Reminds me of when my dad told me to run defrag on my laptop that kept shutting off randomly. I ran it three times, which took like four hours, and it still shut off. Turned out the fan was packed with dust and the thing was overheating. He meant well but he was solving a 2005 problem on a 2015 machine.
