TIL the "stud finds studs" take is backwards, my grandpa's 60 year old framing square has been right the whole time
I used to think that viral advice about scanning for studs with a magnet was gospel, until I helped my uncle rehang a closet door in his 1920s house in Duluth and the magnet kept catching nail heads 5 inches apart. Turns out old lathe walls don't play by the 16 inch rule everyone repeats online, and a $12 stud finder missed every single one. Now I just knock and measure like my grandpa did, and I've been wrong about this for about 8 years. Anyone else got a hot take that fell apart the second they tried it on a real house?

Oh sure, because nothing says "I know what I'm doing" like standing in a 100 year old house waving a magnet around while your uncle watches you fail. My favorite part is how these videos always show some nice clean new build where everything is exactly 16 on center and the drywall is basically begging you to find the studs. Try that trick in my grandma's place in St. Paul and you'll find about nine nails, three of which are holding up a picture frame somebody hung in 1974. I bought a stud finder for like 30 bucks that beeps at literally everything, including my hand, so now it lives in a drawer next to the other gadgets I got tricked into buying. Knocking on the wall has never once lied to me.
