I finally tried to make a fancy layered cake from a magazine.

Everything was going okay until I stacked the tiers. The whole thing slid sideways and looked like a leaning tower! I tried to prop it up with extra frosting, but that just made it worse. My family laughed so hard when I brought it to the table. Lesson learned: maybe start with a simple sheet cake next time.

Was it at least tasty though? I made a layer cake once that looked like a total mess, but everyone still ate it. The leaning tower look kinda adds character, idk.

My sister's wedding cake was a four-layer monster that almost collapsed. I stuck plastic straws into the bottom layers before adding the next tier, and it held up PERFECTLY. Chilling each layer in the freezer for 20 minutes makes them way easier to handle. Also, use a thin crumb coat of frosting to lock in crumbs and create a sticky surface. Once you get the support right, those tall cakes look impressive and stay put.

Yikes, that sounds like a classic cake fail! I've TOTALLY been there with layers sliding everywhere. Using extra frosting to prop it up is a BAD idea because it just adds weight and makes things more slippery. What you NEED is something solid inside, like dowel rods or even cut straws, to hold the tiers straight. Chilling the layers first helps them firm up SO much before you stack. Don't give up on layered cakes though, once you get the support right they're really fun to make!
