PSA: I make my students learn off-hand work before using jacks.

Yeah, that 'closer look' thing @reed.barbara mentioned is spot on. Felt the same switching to off-hand first, it just clicks better once your hands get the feel.

Our neighborhood's chalk art festival got huge online, now it's just faded streaks on the pavement.

But what lasting good does a week of fame actually do for a town?

I finally tried to make a fancy layered cake from a magazine.

My sister's wedding cake was a four-layer monster that almost collapsed. I stuck plastic straws into the bottom layers before adding the next tier, and it held up PERFECTLY. Chilling each layer in the freezer for 20 minutes makes them way easier to handle. Also, use a thin crumb coat of frosting to lock in crumbs and create a sticky surface. Once you get the support right, those tall cakes look impressive and stay put.

Update: My tool wall organization cut service time on residential jobs

That "chasing screws across the floor" bit hits home. It's part of a bigger pattern where small items just have a mind of their own. Like how pens always roll away when you need them, or keys hide in the last place you look. Even bobby pins seem to teleport to another dimension. It's like the universe enjoys watching us hunt for tiny things lmao.

Appreciation post: My garage hobby with toy cranes sharpens my real job skills

I saw a big construction company use scale model lifts for crew training last year. It's not about playing with toys, it's about planning the whole pick before you're on the clock with a real crane. You set up the model, block the load, and walk through every step to spot where things could go wrong. That visual practice builds a gut feeling for balance and clearance that absolutely transfers to the real site.
