Last month's read on ocean pollution split our group apart
We picked a novel about plastic in the seas. Half the group loved how it raised awareness. The other half said it was just fear-mongering. One guy even walked out during the debate. I tried to keep things calm, but it was hopeless. Now we're scrambling to find a new book that won't cause fights. It's exhausting trying to balance deep talks with keeping peace.

Nothing says fun book club like a walkout over ocean trash, lmao. Maybe stick to picture books next time to avoid the drama.

Respect the book club for picking a real world topic like ocean trash. Heated discussions show that members are actually invested in the material. Sticking to safe books just to keep peace misses the point of sharing ideas.

Feel for you trying to keep that peace. It's tough when a topic people care about turns into a shouting match, right? Maybe a different style of book on the same issue could let you talk without the walkouts.

Ugh, we had that happen with a book on factory farms... total meltdown. What finally worked was picking another book on the same big topic, but from a writer with a lighter, funnier tone. Our club still got to talk about the heavy stuff, but the mood in the room was totally different and way less fight-y. We read this one by a guy who tried to live zero-waste, and his funny fails managed to keep everyone talking without yelling.
