Hot take: I stopped using a comb on thick, curly hair and it changed my game

For years I fought with dense, curly cuts, trying to comb through sections to get them even. Last month, a client in Charlotte with hair like steel wool came in, and on a whim I just used my shears and my fingers to pick and shape. The cut took half the time and the shape fell into place way better because I wasn't pulling the curl pattern straight. Has anyone else ditched the comb for certain textures?

It's just hair though, right? Seems like a lot of fuss over a comb.

Skip the comb entirely, even at the start. Doesn't pulling any comb through dry, dense curls just mess up the natural clump pattern right away? I feel like you're fighting the hair before you even make the first cut. What's your method for sectioning without one, just your fingers and clips?

Absolutely, going comb-free was a total lightbulb moment for me too. I used to fight with a fine-tooth comb on dense curls and it just created so much tension and frizz. Now my default for that texture is just water, my fingers, and shears. The curl clumps stay together and you can see the true shape as you cut. It just moves more naturally and the client leaves with way better definition.

What about using a wide-tooth comb just for the initial part?
