I was holding my clippers wrong for a decade and a client's dad pointed it out

I mean, I've been cutting hair since I was 19, and for the longest time I held my clippers with a really tight, straight-on grip, like I was holding a power drill. I thought it gave me more control, you know? Then about six months ago, this regular's father, an older guy who used to run a shop in Chicago, was watching me do a fade. He waited until I was done and just said, 'Son, you're fighting the tool. Let it sit in your hand like a paintbrush, not a hammer.' That simple line flipped a switch. I tried it the next day, letting my fingers relax and the clipper rest more in my palm, and the difference was crazy. My wrist didn't ache after a full day, and my lines got way smoother because my hand wasn't so stiff. It's wild how one little piece of advice can change your whole flow after so many years. Has anyone else had a basic grip or posture thing they had to unlearn?

That's interesting, but a super tight grip actually works for me. Maybe it depends on the clipper model or your hand size, idk. I tried the relaxed way and just felt like I had less control over the blade.

Guess it's one of those things, @wood.uma, where what feels right in your hand just wins.

But what if a loose grip gives better results, @wood.uma?
