The way most guys fade the parietal ridge is totally off
I was watching this older barber in Atlanta last weekend and he showed me something simple. He starts his fade about a half inch lower on the parietal ridge than pretty much every tutorial says. He explained that the natural curve of the head changes right there, and if you start your guideline too high you get that shelf look no matter how much you blend. I tried it on three clients this week and each one looked way more natural without extra work. Anyone else been taught to drop that guide lower than the standard spot?

Yeah, that "start lower than the tutorials say" thing is solid advice, but I gotta gently push back on one part. It's not really about the parietal ridge itself being lower, it's more about where the head shape actually changes from flat to round. The standard tutorials always point to that bony ridge you can feel, but a lot of guys have a softer transition there that makes the guideline look like a shelf if you hit it exact. If you move it down just a bit, like a half inch, you're basically catching where the skull actually starts to curve, not just where the bone sticks out. Your mileage may vary, but I've had better luck feeling for that curve with my fingers instead of just eyeballing the ridge.
