Bought a $6 used copy of a dead novelist's book at a yard sale in Tulsa and couldn't finish chapter 3
I spent years nodding along when people called him a genius, but sitting with the actual pages, the plot just wandered and the guy clearly hated his own characters. A high school teacher of mine once said you can't argue with taste, but I think you can argue with pretending to have read something you didn't. What book did you finally admit you only praised because everyone else did?
Read half of Infinite Jest in college just so I could bring it up at parties and feel smart. Told everyone it changed my life when really I just liked the footnotes and wanted people to think I got it. Still haven't picked it back up and probably never will.
Had a buddy do the exact same thing with Gravity's Rainbow, carried it around campus like a badge. He finally admitted sophomore year he only made it 80 pages in and just liked how the cover looked on his desk.
