I tried ranking dead musicians by how many people under 30 can name a song, and the results broke my brain
Last month I sat down with my cousin's 19 year old roommate in Austin and played her 10 seconds of tracks from Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, and Amy Winehouse, and she got zero out of three. Then I tried the same thing with 2Pac and she named three songs before I even hit play, which was not the result I expected going in. Is there a cutoff where a dead artist stops being 'iconic' and just becomes trivia for people who collect vinyl?
It's the same reason kids know every word to a 30 year old rap song but can't name a Beatles tune. Music gets passed down through what's still being played in cars and on TikTok, not through some hall of fame list. Once the last person who was actually there stops playing it, iconic turns into homework.
