Marilyn Monroe's 'genius' is just dead blonde branding

Last Friday I rewatched Some Like It Hot for the first time in 10 years and realized she's fine but not the legend people claim, just a sad woman propped up by a studio machine. Has anyone else watched her later movies and felt the myth is way bigger than the actual work, or am I missing something?

Is it just me, or is watching Marilyn Monroe now like realizing your favorite diner's secret sauce is basically ketchup and regret? I'd say the myth's carrying the movies, but my own legacy is just a half-eaten bag of chips, so what do I know.
