Serious question, why does everyone act like Van Gogh only sold one painting while he was alive?
I kept hearing that line at a gallery talk in Kansas City back in March, so I looked it up and found out he actually sold several works and traded others for food and supplies. The "one painting" story comes from a single sale people like to repeat because it makes for a better sad story than the real one. Does anyone here think the real numbers make him less interesting, or does the myth just stick because it sounds cooler?
