Warning: My granddad saw Buddy Holly play in 1957 and said the crowd barely clapped, but now everyone acts like he was a legend
My granddad grew up in Lubbock and caught Buddy Holly at a local dance hall in 1957, and he always said maybe 40 people showed up and most of them were there for the beer. He passed a couple years back, but I still remember him laughing about how Buddy was just some local kid with thick glasses back then, not some icon. Now I see people online posting tribute videos every February like he was the voice of a generation, and it bugs me because the same folks probably couldn't name one Crickets song besides Peggy Sue. I'm not saying the man couldn't write a hook, but the way we rewrite the past to make dead artists into saints says more about us than them. Does anyone else have a relative who saw a now famous dead musician before they blew up, and was it as underwhelming as this?
