Appreciation post: I just hit 10,000 miles on a set of ceramic wheel bearings I installed myself, which is way more than the 5,000-mile lifespan everyone in the shop told me to expect.
I think the common advice to replace them so often is overly cautious and based on cheap industrial-grade bearings, not the high-quality sealed ones we can get now, so what's the highest mileage you've actually seen on a quality bearing set before a real failure?

That 10k mark is solid. It's like the oil change thing, where the 3,000 mile rule stuck around long after engine tech and oil quality made it pointless. Good sealed bearings just last if they're kept clean. Saw a set on a buddy's fixed gear go over 20k before any play developed.

The 20k mark on a fixed gear is a great example. It shows how much a clean, simple setup can extend bearing life compared to a messy drivetrain. Proper seals and basic care seem to matter more than any set mileage number.
