Hit 500 completed blades this weekend and it hit me harder than I expected
I finished up a kitchen knife for a customer in Portland on Saturday and realized it was my 500th blade. I never kept a formal count but I guessed around that number a few months back. Seeing the actual tally on my log sheet felt different though. It made me think about all the scrap steel and failed heat treats along the way. How many of you actually track your builds from start to finish? I used to just eyeball it but now I regret not keeping better notes.

Started tracking after my 20th blade that exploded in the quench and took a chunk out of my garage wall. Now I keep notes just to remind myself how much expensive scrap I've made.

Twenty blades? Dude, you've basically funded a small renovation project for your garage wall at this point. At least the notes double as a trophy case for your... uh... most explosive failures.

Tbh those garage wall chunks are basically battle scars at this point. Twenty blades is a lot of hard work and a lot of money gone, but at least you're learning something from every single one. Ngl I respect the dedication to tracking it all, even if the notes make you cringe a little.
