Honestly, my forge welds were a mess until I started using a proper flux
For months I was just using borax from the grocery store and getting cold shuts every time. Switched to a real blacksmithing flux last week and the first weld I tried on some 1080 just flowed together like butter. Anyone got a good source for it that doesn't cost a fortune?

Right? It's wild how often the right tool just makes the whole process click. I see that with so many hobbies, not just smithing.

Oh man, tell me about it. I tried to carve a simple spoon once with a dull pocket knife. Looked like a beaver went to town on a stick. Then I got a proper hook knife and suddenly I'm making something you could actually eat with. It's the same with my dad's woodworking. He fought with a cheap saw for years before getting a good Japanese pull saw. Night and day difference.

Totally, it's like what you said lucasw84. The wrong tool just makes you fight the work instead of doing it.
