Quench oil temp trick saved my blade after 3 cracked ones
Kept getting hairline cracks on my knives, tried every oil I had. Finally warmed the canola to 130°F in a water bath before quenching, worked perfect. Anyone else run into this with thinner blades or am I just slow?
Man I feel your pain on those cracked blades. Lost three of my own before I figured out the warm oil thing too, and it was driving me nuts because the steel was good and my grind was fine. Cold oil just shocks the edge too fast on thin stock, especially around 1/16 inch or less. 130 sounds about right, I usually aim for 120 to 140 depending on the steel.
