Pro tip: slowing a news clip to 0.25x is how I caught a reporter say 'the mayor died' instead of 'the mayor lied'
I was messing around with an old local news upload from a station in Buffalo just to kill time on my lunch break. At normal speed the anchor clearly said the mayor lied about the budget, no question about it, I even typed it up to post here. Then I dragged the playback speed down to 0.25x because the audio felt slightly off, like the words were sliding together. Turns out there's a tiny breath and a tongue click between the D sound and the rest, and he actually said died. I checked three other uploads of the same broadcast and they all have the same audio, so it's not a re-upload glitch, the guy really said it and kept going like nothing happened. Slowing stuff down has caught me at least 6 other mishears this year, including a weather guy saying 'schools are closed' when I thought he said 'schools are gross.' Has anyone else found a clip that totally changes meaning when you drop the speed? I want to know if 0.25x is enough or if I should be going lower on certain uploads.
Wait, so the guy said the mayor died on live TV and nobody blinked? That's wild and honestly kind of scary that it just slid past everyone at normal speed. I'd say 0.25x is usually enough but some mics pick up weird stuff, so dropping to 0.1x on that one clip wouldn't hurt just to hear the breath cleaner.
