The guy at Pax Unplugged who taught me a game with just 12 words
At Pax Unplugged in Philadelphia back in December, I sat down at a random table to try a small card game I had never heard of. The guy across from me, maybe 60 years old, explained the whole thing in about 12 words and then just started playing without saying anything else. I was lost for the first two rounds, but he would tap the deck or point at my hand whenever I was about to mess up, and by round three it clicked. It was the fastest I have ever learned a game, and I still think about how little he needed to say to teach it. Has anyone else had a teacher like that at a con, where less talking actually worked better?
The best teachers at cons are the ones who read the table and shut up when they see it clicking. I've watched guys talk through every rule twice and lose the whole table, while the quiet ones just nudge a card and let you mess up. Next time that happens, let yourself lose a round or two, that's usually where the game actually sticks.
