PSA: The difference a proper pre-heat made on my last weld job

I was working on a 3-inch carbon steel pipe section for a boiler feed line last week, and the first weld pass looked awful, full of cracks. I was using the same settings I always do. My foreman, Greg, came over and asked if I'd let the metal warm up. I hadn't, because it was a rush job. He made me stop, grabbed a rosebud tip for the torch, and we spent a solid 15 minutes just slowly bringing the whole joint area up to about 300 degrees. The next pass went on smooth as butter, with a perfect bead profile. That extra half hour of pre-heat saved me hours of grinding and rework. It was a real 'duh' moment for me. Has anyone else had a specific job where skipping a basic step like that came back to bite you?

It's wild how the RUSH to save time always creates more work. That pre-heat step is like the universe's little test.

Right, like every shortcut backfires eventually.

Totally feel that. The oven timer is basically a lie. I just turn it on first thing, then get everything else ready while it heats up. Trying to skip it always means opening the door to check and ruining the temperature.
