Rented a 400 ton crane for a tank job or built the scaffold, and I'm still second guessing it
Had a 60 foot tank to re-line at a plant outside Gary, Indiana back in April. We could either rent a 400 ton crane for two days at $18k or build a full scaffold inside for about $6k in labor. I went with the crane because it saved us four days and the schedule was tight. Now I'm wondering if the scaffold would have been safer and let us work slower without a clock ticking. What do you all do when the schedule pressure pushes you toward the expensive fast option?
Did you factor in what happens if that crane goes down for a day? That is the hidden cost nobody talks about with the rental route. When you build the scaffold, your crew and your tools are the only things that can break, and you can usually work around it. With a rented 400 ton crane sitting on site, every hour it is not lifting is money gone and a schedule you cannot get back. A buddy of mine got burned when the crane company had an operator call in sick and the whole day was shot. The slow cheap way is sometimes the one with fewer ways to fail.
