Worst week I ever had was a boiler tube replacement in Gary, Indiana last June

We were three days into a tube replacement when a steam drum blowdown valve failed and shot 350 degree water across the deck. Nobody got hit, but it shut us down for 48 hours waiting on a new valve from a supplier two states over. Has anyone else had a minor part stop a whole job cold?

Oh man, come on. A whole 48 hours shut down over one valve? That feels like they could have rigged something temporary or found a workaround. I know boilers are serious business but it sounds like you guys were already deep in the job. Maybe the real problem wasn't the part itself but how the whole thing was planned out. Like why didn't they have a spare valve on site or a backup supplier lined up? Seems like a lot of downtime for one small piece. I'd be questioning if that's really a good excuse or just bad management.

emmaking said "one small piece" like that valve was just some random bolt. But in a boiler system, that valve is basically the heart of your pressure control. You rig something temporary and you're asking for a blowout or a lawsuit. I get the frustration though, it does feel like someone dropped the ball on planning. But would you rather they rush it and something goes wrong? That downtime is expensive but a boiler explosion is a whole different level of expensive.
