Our club picked a 700 page book and only 2 people finished it, so we made a 30 page rule
Our book club in Sacramento almost fell apart two months ago when we picked a 700 page history book and only 2 of the 9 of us made it past chapter 4. The meeting turned into 40 minutes of people guessing what happened and one guy reading plot points off his phone. So we started a rule where anyone can call it quits at page 30 and still come to the meeting. Now we do a quick round at the start where people say where they stopped, and nobody gets shamed for it. Last month we had 7 people finish a 280 page novel, which never would have happened before. The best part is the debate got way better since more people actually have opinions about the ending. Does your group have a page limit or a way to handle the book nobody finishes?
