So, during our book club (the one with my neighbors) I figured out why we get so heated over character choices (it's kinda personal, you know?).

I get why you'd say that about it being personal... but honestly? Sometimes we just get mad at dumb story choices. The character does something so unbelievable it pulls you right out of the book. It's not about seeing yourself in them, it's about the writer making a bad call that wrecks the whole plot. The fight is just because we all want the story to be good, not because we're all taking it to heart.

Exactly. It's not personal, it's about craft. A character acting against their own logic just to move the plot is lazy writing. It breaks the trust between the reader and the story. That's what makes people so mad, they feel like their time was wasted on a cheap trick.

Yeah, the "unbelievable" part is exactly it. I've learned to just put the book down for a week when that happens. Coming back later, you either see what the author was going for or you know for sure it's just bad writing.
