The debate over page 147 of 'The Goldfinch'

Our book club spent 40 minutes arguing whether Theo should have kept the painting or turned it in. I said keep it because the whole story falls apart otherwise. We finally voted 6 to 5 in favor of my side, but two members still texted me afterward saying I was wrong. Has anyone else had a vote split that went on for weeks?

Yeah exactly, that split vote stuff can drag on forever. We had almost the same thing with page 234 in "A Man Called Ove" where half the group said Ove was just stubborn and the other half said he was a tragic hero. Three weeks later people were still bringing it up during the wine part. I ended up having to make a group chat rule that we'd only talk about the current book after the meeting. It got that bad. But honestly, you're right about Theo keeping the painting. Without that choice there's no story, just a boring thing about a kid who did the right thing and went home.

Turning it in was the right call, kept his moral compass intact.

Honestly, that's gotta feel rough but you're totally right. Ngl, holding onto something that valuable would've eaten him alive eventually.
