Took our club 3 weeks to pick our next book because one member kept pushing a 900 page doorstop
We usually vote on the next pick at the end of each meeting, and it takes maybe 10 minutes. This time we had one guy show up with a list of reasons we had to read a 900 page Russian novel, and the whole thing turned into a 3 week email chain. In the end we went with a 280 page mystery that nobody was excited about, just to make it stop. How do you all handle that one member who won't let a pick go?

Honestly I heard a podcast about book clubs and the host said the trick is making the pick time-boxed, like you literally set a timer and when it dings you vote no matter what. Tbh that would have saved you guys three weeks of your life. The real problem is one person treating the club like their personal soapbox instead of a group thing. I get wanting to push a big book you love, but when nobody else is into it you gotta read the room and let it go. My old club had a rule where anyone can veto one pick per year, which sounds weird but it stopped the endless email chains because people knew they had one shot to use and then it was done.
