Greenhouse vs. Outdoor Grow, my tomatoes made the call for me
I ran a side by side last summer in Columbus, 12 tomato plants in my small greenhouse and 12 outside. The greenhouse ones got blasted with heat in July and half of them dropped their flowers, the outdoor ones did fine. I picked the greenhouse because I thought it would extend my season, but now I'm just using it for seedlings and early greens. Anyone else find their setup works better for one thing and worse for another?

And that heat stress is exactly why I ended up treating my greenhouse like a shady spot for things like lettuce and arugula once June hits. I put a shade cloth over the top and it still hit 95 inside on a 80 degree day, so I gave up on summer tomatoes in there completely. Now I use it for early peppers and basil in spring, then rip everything out by July and just let it bake empty while the outdoor plants do their thing. The real kicker is my greenhouse tomatoes grew huge vines but barely set fruit, while the scrappy outdoor ones looked half dead and gave me a bushel. Made me wonder if a greenhouse is just a fancy way to make your plants sweat.
