Update: my $45 waffle maker from 2019 finally quit, and I fixed it instead of tossing it
Back in 2019 I bought a basic waffle maker at a Target in Columbus for $45, and it died on me last Saturday morning mid-batch. The light just stayed off and the plates never got hot. Years ago I would have dumped it in the trash and ordered a new one that same day, because everything I owned in my 20s was cheap and I never thought twice about replacing it. My dad was the opposite. He kept a coffee can of old screws and would sit at the kitchen table in Toledo taking apart a toaster just to see what went bad. I used to laugh at him for it. This time I grabbed a screwdriver, popped the bottom plate off, and found one of the wires to the heating element had come loose. Ten minutes with a wire nut and it was back to making waffles. I spent $2 on the part instead of $45 on a new unit, and honestly it felt good. Anyone else started fixing small appliances lately instead of just buying new ones, or am I the only one who waited this long?
