Can we talk about the guy in Buffalo who showed me a level string trick on a 214 unit apartment job
I was on a 214 unit apartment job in Buffalo back in April. We had one foreman who kept riding everybody about corners being out of plumb, but his own leads looked off to me. This older guy named Ray on my crew pulled a level string off his truck, hung it down the corner, and showed me how to read the gap against the block. He never said one word to the foreman. I started checking my own corners that way and caught two bad leads the next week. Been doing it on every job since. Curious if any of you use a string instead of a 4 foot level for checking corners or if I'm just late to this.
Man, that string trick is the real deal. I picked it up from an old timer on a job in Cheektowaga years back and never looked back. A 4 foot level only tells you about that one spot, but a string shows you the whole run of the corner at once. I keep a mason line in my pouch now and just drop it down, then eyeball the gap at the top, middle, and bottom of the block. Caught a bowed lead last month that a level would've missed completely. Your foreman probably knew his stuff was off, which is why he never said a word back to Ray.
