I finally figured out that proper hydration beats any energy drink for staying sharp on the wall.

Wait, is that true for everyone though? Sure water is the baseline, but sometimes you just need the caffeine hit too. Those drinks aren't just about hydration, they're about the stimulant. The sugar crash is the real problem, not the caffeine itself. I usually just drink some strong coffee and bring a big water bottle for the actual climbing.

Man, my shaky hands from too much coffee probably count as extra training for those tiny crimps.

But does caffeine really hurt that much, @the_simon?

Hydration alone won't cut it when you're facing a brutal overhang at the end of a long day. @the_simon has a point about caffeine being a useful stimulant without the sugar crash. Those energy drinks give you a quick focus boost that water just can't match. I've seen climbers use a bit of caffeine to stay alert and make precise moves. Sure, water is basic, but ignoring other aids might hold you back. What about times when mental sharpness matters more than just being hydrated?
