My $300 laser level that sits in the truck collecting dust
Bought a rotary laser for a retaining wall job thinking it would save me time. Spent two hours setting it up and fiddling with the receiver, then just grabbed my trusty 4-foot spirit level and finished the wall faster. Anyone else dumped money on fancy gear that ended up being slower than the basic tools?

Gotta disagree here, and I say that with respect. Rotary lasers have a learning curve, no doubt, but once you get past the setup they shine for long runs. Your wall might've been short enough that a level worked fine, but try marking grade across 50 feet of footings or aligning posts on a deck. That receiver fuss is usually a one time thing, kind of like learning any tool. Sucks you had a rough first go, but calling it a dust collector after one job is like tossing a circular saw because your first cut was crooked. Give it another shot on a bigger project, maybe grab a buddy who owns one to show you the ropes. Cheap levels definitely have their place, but they ain't magic on long distances.
