Old foreman's trick about wet mortar changed my whole approach
Had a talk with a retired foreman, 40 years on the trowel, and he said I was wasting time with my one mix for all jobs. He showed me how he adjusts the sand and lime based on the brick type, even in the same week's weather. Anyone else find that matching the mortar to the specific brick is overkill or does it actually matter on your jobs?

Read an article on historic brick restoration that said the old masons were basically mixing for the brick's porosity, not just for looks. Turns out soft old brick pulls moisture out fast, so they'd wet the bed and add more lime to keep it from setting too quick. Sounds like that foreman knew his stuff, and it's worth testing on a small patch before you write it off.
